The Ghana Manganese Company Limited (GMCL) has commissioned the Nsuta Community Library worth GH¢300,000 in the Tarkwa Nsuaem constituency of the Western Region.
The library stocked with books and computers was funded by the GMCL, under the leadership of Mr Jurgen Eijgendaal, Managing Director of the firm, to serve as a beacon of knowledge for the Nsuta community but located at the Nsuta Saint Mary Catholic Basic School.
Speaking at the commissioning, Mr Benjamin Quashi, Chief Sustainability Officer, was confident that the facility would offer the intended platform for digital resources, access to appropriate information, education, and innovation.
He asked the community to accord the needed respect to support staff and volunteers, who may be assigned as librarians to provide the essential literacy and education support services, adding that, "adopt an ownership mentality towards the facility and equipment for longevity".
He said GMCL, in its capacity as a major stakeholder of this project, would endeavor to provide the necessary assistance where appropriate to see to its maintenance and provide other ancillary functions as well.
Madam Kokor Addy, Head of Human Capital, GMCL, said they had revived the library to, reaffirm its purpose as a hub of learning and development but sadly it had remained unused since 2019.
She said this bold initiative taken by the GMCL reflects their shared commitment to education, community growth and the future of Nsuta.
Madam Addy said students would have access to important books, computers and other resources that would nurture their intellectual growth and prepare them for opportunities beyond the classroom, while to the broader community, it would be a resource center for continuous learning and empowerment.
"The library is not yet fully equipped to meet all its intended purposes. Plans are underway to add essential facilities such as projectors, additional computers, CCTV cameras and other tools to enhance its efficiency and ensure smooth operations, Madam Addy said.
Madam Beatrice Salaga, Head teacher of Nsuta Saint Mary Catholic Basic School, said they would ensure that school children in Nsuta and its environs make good use of the facility since it would go a long way to help their future.
Mr Thomas Awortwe, Assembly member of Nsuta, said "I am grateful to GMCL for all the work you have been doing to assist catchment communities in your operational area. My office will liaise with our traditional leaders and the school's management to ensure proper maintenance of the facility"
