The Police Service has arrested 12 suspects for looting and causing damage to property in some parts of the country.
According to preliminary investigations by the service, the suspects attacked and caused damage to some state property, including the setting ablaze of the Electoral Commission (EC) Office in Damango in the Savannah Region.
Briefing journalists about the incident in Accra yesterday, the Director of Public Affairs of the Police Service, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, said the fire had caused damage to some residences of District Chief Executives (DCEs) and vandalised some coalition centres in some parts of the region.
Additionally, she said that some of the suspects broke into the School Feeding Programme warehouse in Tamale and made away with some items, including food stuffs.
“Footages of the attacks, vandalism and looting have been obtained and are being reviewed by a team of investigators to get the perpetrators arrested to face justice,” she said.
ACP Ansah-Akrofi said that evidence of the incident had been acquired and expressed optimism that the perpetrators would face justice, as investigations were being conducted by the service.
ACP Ansah-Akrofi urged the general public to contact the police on the police’s toll free number, 0800311311, whenever there was any information they wanted to share with the service.
“Our officers are ready behind all the telephones, and we’ll be picking and responding to situations as they share information with us,” she said.
The Director of Public Affairs further urged the public to have trust in the police service through the electoral period, adding that the police had deployed officers to key locations across the country to maintain law and order.
“We urge the general public to remain calm, as police officers have been deployed to key locations with intensified patrols to maintain law and order.
ACP Ansah-Akrofi further assured that safety of the citizenry would be addressed and the service was committed to ensuring that safety prevailed, before and after the elections
