The Kumasi City market is once again buzzing with activity after the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) restored power following a two-day disconnection.
The blackout was prompted by the market’s failure to settle outstanding arrears of over GH?7 million.
After paying a substantial portion of the debt and presenting a proposal to clear the remaining arrears, the ECG agreed to restore power.
This is not the first time the market has faced power disconnections due to payment disputes.
Reuben Amey, secretary of the Kejetia Central Market Traders union, urged traders to settle their debts to enable the management to clear the outstanding arrears.
The operations manager of the facility confirmed that a payment plan had been presented to the ECG and appealed to traders to collaborate with management to avoid future disconnections.
However, Nana Akwasi Prempeh, president of the Federation of Kumasi Traders, called for the termination of the contract with the individual responsible for installing meters, citing incompetence.
