The initiative, dubbed “Kinsley Quizzes Readathon,” is to address the challenges faced by primary school pupils in reading.

Launching the project, Dr. Agyemang stressed the need to ensure that more resources are extended to the basic level to develop the reading skills of pupils.

“We are very much aware of the results of the national standardization test for basic two, where in 2015 the result showed that 98% of Ghanaian children at basic two cannot read. In 2022, the same test was conducted and 64% can still not read. This is not something anyone should be proud of.”

He believes that the intervention in the Abuakwa South Municipality will encourage students to have basic skills in reading and comprehension.

The Readathon Challenge will take contestants through four rounds consisting of word spelling, reading efficiency and proficiency, reading comprehension, character expression, and building of other words selected from the reading books.

Twenty schools have been selected from the municipality for the Challenge, with six weeks to prepare fifteen sets of textbooks.

The Kinsley Quizzes Readathon will provide educational materials to pupils after the competition.
