In an effort to shed light on the importance of quality education in Ghana, the Ghana Under Tertiary Awards organizing committee, through their mother company Pieriang Spring, organized an event titled "After School, What's Next?" at the Wesley Grammar School. The event aimed to guide students on selecting the right university program and its potential impact on their future career opportunities as well as other viable options to consider after completing the second cycle institution. Several notable speakers, including Maame Kyeraa, TV presenter and law student at the University of Ghana, addressed the students and shared valuable insights.
Maame Kyeraa, in her speech on program selection in the university and its effect on career opportunities, emphasized the significance of making informed decisions aligned with individual passions, interests, and long-term goals. She encouraged students to reflect on their strengths, weaknesses, and personal preferences when choosing a program of study. Maame Kyeraa emphasized that pursuing a program that genuinely excites them would enhance their learning experience and motivation to excel in their chosen field.
Furthermore, she stressed the importance of considering the demand and market trends associated with the chosen program. Conducting thorough research into industry growth potential, job opportunities, and salary prospects can provide valuable insights into potential career paths. Maame Kyeraa advised students to seek guidance from academic advisors, professionals, and alumni who have established successful careers in their areas of interest. Attending career fairs, connecting with industry professionals, and pursuing internships were also recommended as ways to gain practical exposure and better understand different career options.
The event also featured other notable speakers who shared their expertise and advice. Jamal Abu Mohammed, Manager of Administration at the National Communications Authority, highlighted the need for students to study hard for their exams, explained the cut-off points for various public universities, discussed course selection at the tertiary level, and provided general advice on the importance of hard work.
Walter Anonadaga, a young businessman with investments in various sectors, spoke about the importance of making strategic friendships, learning skills and trades, acquiring practical knowledge such as driving and table etiquette, and cultivating the habit of reading. His motivational encouragement aimed to inspire students to broaden their horizons and develop a well-rounded skill set.
The CEO of Pieriang Spring, Mr. Michael Chris Tetteh encouraged students to study hard to make their supporters, including parents and community members, proud. He emphasized the availability of scholarships and financial assistance for those who need further education. Students were urged to be proactive, gain knowledge about their desired programs and corresponding job markets, choose positive friends, and network effectively.
The event was attended by esteemed faculty members, the headmistress Ms. Barbara JT Thompson, and the assistant headmaster of administration, Rev. Samuel SK Ampofo. Both school administrators expressed their gratitude to Pieriang Spring for organizing such an initiative and encouraged the students, particularly the final year students, to study diligently and bring pride to their school.
Mr. Tetteh also announced that the Ghana Under Tertiary Awards night would be held on October 20th, 2023 in Accra, further motivating students to work hard and potentially earn recognition for their achievements.
Mr. Isaac Okyere, one of the sponsors of the event was very optimistic that investing in events like the “After School, what is next” will clearly give life directions to the young generation who are often crowded with several options in life with no credible guidance for making the right choices.
As the event concluded, some of the students of Wesley Grammar interviewed by this reporter revealed that they are leaving the program with a better understanding of the impact their program of choice could have on their future careers. They were inspired to make well-informed decisions, explore their passions, and pursue opportunities for personal growth. The event served as a reminder that their journey through university is just the beginning of an exciting path filled with endless possibilities.
In the words of Maame Kyeraa, "Remember, this is just the beginning of an exciting journey filled with endless possibilities. Embrace it with enthusiasm, curiosity, and the willingness to learn and adapt. Your choices today will shape your tomorrow."
