On Wednesday, 19th April, 2023, the Catholic Church in Accra, witnessed a rare phenomenon of ordaining two auxilliary Bishops to assist the Head Bishop of the Accra Diocese.
The two Bishops, Most Rev. Anthony Narh Asare and Most Rev. John Kobina Louis were, until their appointments as Bishops, Parish Priest of Ss. Anne and Joachim Catholic Church and Director of Priest Personnel, Accra Archdiocese and Vicar General of the Accra Archdiocese, respectively.
The Homilist, the Most Reverend Gabriel Justice Yaw Anokye, Metropolitan Archbishop of Kumasi, admonished the Bishops to know that they have been appointed to help the Archbishop of Accra and implement the ideas that the Archbishop has for the Archdiocese. Archbishop Yaw Anokye noted that just as the human body has only one head, the Archdiocese has only one head, who is Most Rev. Bonaventure Kwofie, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra. He said that they, as auxiliary bishops were to serve as the hands and feet and implement the ideas of their head, adding that they could not go against the will, vision, mission nor direction of their head, Archbishop Kwofie.
Archbishop Yaw Anokye noted that a walking stick is never taller than the owner. He thus admonished the newly ordained bishops to ensure that their head, Archbishop Kwofie increases while they decrease. He said that they should have large ears but small mouths and reminded them to defend the truth at all times.
He also entreated the auxiliary bishops to be humble and seek expert advice from experts anytime they needed it.
The Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, His Excellency, Most Rev. Henry M. Jagodzi?ski told the two bishops in his goodwill message that God had chosen them as true witnesses to Christ the Good Shepherd. He prayed that they would be endowed with knowledge, understanding, and a heart of a good shepherd. The Nuncio was also the Principal Consecrator for the Mass.
The Catholic Bishops Conference warmly welcomed the two bishops into their midst adding that history had been made as this was the first time in the history of the Catholic church in Ghana that two bishops had been ordained on the same day for one diocese. The Conference implored the two bishops to bring their various expertise and experience to bear on the work of the Conference.
The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Accra and Madagascar (SECAM) told the two bishops that their elevation as bishops was in recognition of their humility, selflessness, honesty, diligence, devotion and prayerfulness which had undoubtedly shown that they are worthy servants of God and His church.
The Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, the Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, whom the two bishops would be reporting to, asked all catholic faithful to pray for the two bishops as they assumed their new roles.
