The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has commenced partnership with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT-Ghana) to improve safety on the roads.
The partnership seeks to build the capacities of leaders of transport companies and transport units of both private and public organisations.
According to Kwame Koduah Atuahene, Director of Regulations, Inspections & Compliance, NRSA, the move formed part of plans to ensure all stakeholders were involved in the renewed efforts to clamp down on road crashes.
Speaking during a meeting with officials of CILT in Accra last Friday he said the NRSA regulations required the Authority to organise continuous professional development programmes for transport heads and managers of regulated transport entities, units and departments.
Ahead of the coming into force of the NRSA Regulations, he stated that the authority sought to leverage the expertise of CILT-Ghana to improve the quality of the workforce managing the nation’s fleet through continuous professional development programmes.
Mr Atuahene said the quality of transport service revolved around the quality of safety and transport leaders or professionals.
“With the right attitude and mindset, fleet managers rarely compromise safety for profit or convenience. That expectation begins with the professional development of the critical manpower,” he added.
The Authority, he stated, was focused on improving the quality of safety leadership at transport associations and organisations such as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA), VIPs, and transport units of MMDAs through tailor-made training programmes, and we are excited to partner with CILT-Ghana on this journey.
Mr Atuahene said, the NRSA, as mandated by law, would work to reduce road traffic crashes, injuries and deaths by promoting road safety, coordinating road safety policies and implementing and enforcing road safety standards.
The President of CILT-Ghana, Mark Amoamah, commended the Authority for developing the regulations in collaboration with all stakeholders.
He expressed the commitment of CILT to the partnership and pledged to support the Authority with its academic programmes run by 12 accredited training centres and the Institute’s Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes.
The Vice President of CLIT-Ghana in-charge of Education and Professional Development, Neil Vorleto, said that CILT-Ghana was well-positioned and ready to support the NRSA in implementing the regulations.
