Anti-Slavery International is the first non-governmental organization to be recorded in history. The organization is known for the fight against traditional slavery, human trafficking, child prostitution, and all forms of forced and bonded labour.
The anti-slavery movement, founded as the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society in 1839, is an international non-governmental organization, registered charity, and advocacy group, based in the United Kingdom. In 1990, it was renamed Anti-Slavery International for the Protection of Human Rights, and in 1995 relaunched as Anti-Slavery International.[ The organization reached its height at the end of the 18th century and was the pacesetter for many organizations that followed. It was founded by Thomas Clarkson, Thomas Foxwell Buxton, and other abolitionists from around the world.
The organization has a long history of activities around the world. For instance, in 1850, it developed the ‘slave-free produce’ consumer action groups geared towards promoting alternatives to slave plantation sugar. In 1890, Anti-slavery International helped established the Brussels Act. It was the first comprehensive anti-slavery treaty that allowed the inspection of ships and the arrest of anyone transporting slaves.
In 2005, Anti-slavery International organized a major campaign that resulted in the United Arab Emirates freeing over 3,000 children trafficked to be used as camel jockeys and later abolished the practice. In 2007, the organization helped push for the appointment of a UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery. Also in 2011, the organization’s ‘Home Alone’ campaign played a big part in persuading the International Labour Organization to adopt a convention on decent work for domestic workers. This move secures the rights of many domestic workers worldwide. In the same year, Anti-slavery International campaigned to force the UK government to sign up for a new EU anti-trafficking law. The law provides the legal basis for protection and justice for trafficking victims.
Anti-Slavery International is the world's oldest international human rights organization and the only UK-based charity committed to working exclusively against slavery and related abuses.
