The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Co-operative Credit Union (KATHCCU), a welfare scheme of the hospital, has refurbished and handed over a Stomal Care Unit as part of activities marking 20 years of KATHCCU’s existence.
A stoma is any opening in the body, for example the mouth, nose, and anus, comsidered natural stomata. Any hollow organ can be manipulated into an artificial stoma as necessary including the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, ileum, colon, pleural cavity, ureters and urinary bladder.
Board
The Board Chairman of KATHCCU, Dr. Frank Ankobea said the project which was part of its corporate social responsibility, was also to help lessen the pressure on the hospital.
The facility is expected to enhance services in general but more so, at the surgical directorate.
Dr Ankobea urged staff to develop interest in the credit union concept as well as encourage outsiders to join in order to enable them get assistance in times of financial difficulties.
He urged KATH to play a key role in ensuring proper maintenance of the facility to prolong its lifespan.
A medical officer of KATH, Dr Kwadwo Sarbene said with the help of the facility, the directorate will witness a dramatic change, and performance of doctors and nurses will also be enhanced.
