As part of efforts to push government's COVID-19 vaccination drive, the Strategic Communications Africa Limited (Stratcomm Africa), in partnership with MasterCard Foundation, has organized a community sensitization and vaccination exercise in the La Bawaleshie community in the Ayawaso West Municipality in Accra.
Speaking at the event, Dr Louisa Matey, the Ayawaso West Municipal Health Director said that myths surrounding the COVID vaccine including its effect on fertility in women, amongst others, was untrue.
She stated that the drive had become necessary with the discovery of the new OMICRON strain as well as the impending Christmas festivities in order to reduce the spread of the virus in the country.
She said that the health directorate changed their vaccination strategy after noticing rising levels of hesitancy among people.
Dr Matey disclosed that the door to door strategy in the Ayawaso West Municipality yielded satisfactory results and would therefore be pushed further in order to achieve more results and reduce the rate of mortality.
She emphasized wearing of nose masks, washing and sanitizing of hands, practicing social distancing and observing other COVID protocols.
She noted that government and the Municipal Health Directorate would ensure vaccines reached as many Ghanaians as possible.
She also lauded Stratcomm and Mastercard Foundation's partnership and encouraged other institutions to follow suit in partnering the directorate to sensitize and vaccinate as many communities as possible.
Dr Martey pointed out that the University of Ghana Hospital, Nyaho Medical Center and the Westlands Medical Center are designated static sites for COVID vaccination.
Myra Ankrah, A representative from Stratcomm Africa who spoke to the media said that people were fatigued in relation to observing the COVID protocols hence the rise in infections.
She described the festive season as a crucial moment in the country that makes it necessary for Stratcomm Africa and Mastercard Foundation to sensitize and vaccinate various communities especially the in Ayawaso West Municipality.
Ms Ankrah said that Stratcomm Africa had been engaging in a digital campaign dubbed #ItsUpToUs to reach a larger number of people in their homes.
She said that they had been to other communities such as Agbogbloshie and Tema Newton and intend to visit about 2 million more communities within the country.
"Our aim is to understand the reasons for people's hesitancy in taking the vaccines, educate them on the COVID-19 pandemic as well as vaccinate them" she added.
The program was preceded by a play in the local Ga language to educate the community on COVID-19, followed by a Question and Answer session and ended with free vaccinations for persons above 15 years.
