Four universities ready to battle it out at the maiden edition of inter tertiary ICT competition dubbed Unigeek challenge
After several digital hours of battle in the knockout rounds, Leann Consult, in partnership with MTN Ghana, the leading Telecommunications service provider is happy to announce the grand finale of Ghana’s first and biggest inter-tertiary ICT battle, the Unigeek Challenge on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at the Accra Digital Centre off the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange from 2:00pm.
The final event will see four universities, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana Technology University College (GTUC), Central University and the University of Cape Coast battle it out for the coveted prize of ICT products for the winning university as well as cash prizes for the contestants.
Speaking ahead of the grand finale of UniGeek Challenge 2020 the Project Director of Leann Consult Mr Fiifi Banson said, “Like many other events across the globe, UniGeek Challenge also suffered its fair share of Covid-19 interruptions delaying the contest for close to 6 months. We are happy to have resumed the competition and gone through the process and are ready for the final. We are looking out for the very best from each of the competing institutions as they display knowledge in ICT”.
In his comments, the Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Mr. Noel Kojo-Ganson, indicated that ICT education is very critical in recent times as it is the driving force of world economies and it behooves on all to acquire knowledge in the area of learning to stay relevant and connect to the rest of the world. He said, “As an enabler of opportunities, MTN sees UniGeek Challenge as a platform that challenges the minds of the young tertiary student to think and act digital as it creates more awareness about the opportunities in the digital world. By this partnership we are powering the digital experience of the youth with our Pulse service which has a mixed bag of voice and data packages”. Mr. Kojo-Ganson congratulated the finalists and urged them to keep learning and researching on how ICT can be used to propel development in our country.
Launched on Friday, February 28th 2020 at the Head Office of MTN Ghana by Dr. Evans Takyi Ankomah-Asare, Coordinator for Universities and Polytechnics, at the Ministry of Education, indicated the contest is designed to promote ICT education among the youth and to boost digitization in Ghana.
Originally slated for April, the battle eventually set sail in October with a vigorous knockout encounter between some 7 tertiary institutions; CK- Tadem University, Navrongo, University of Professional Studies, Accra, All Nations University, Koforidua, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana Technology University College (GTUC), Central University, Accra and the University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast.
At the final count, CK- Tadem University, University of Professional Studies, and All Nations University failed to progress to the finale setting an apt battle among the latter 4 institutions.
The four finalists will get the chance to win the following prizes:
Winning Schools – 10 desktops to promote ICT education
Winning Contestants – GHC 2,000.00 each, a laptop each and products from MTN Pulse
2nd – GHC 1,500.00 each, a tablet each and products from MTN Pulse
3rd – GHC 1,000.00 each, a mobile phone each and products from MTN Pulse
4th – GHC 500.00 each and products from MTN Pulse.
