The citizenry has been encouraged to show active interest in government projects to ensure they are executed properly to serve their purposes.
Madam Lucielle Hewlett Annan, Greater Accra Regional Director, National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), who gave the advice, said engendering community ownership was the only to ensure sustainable rapid socioeconomic development at the community level.
The Regional Director said this at a Social Auditing Forum, organised by the Commission at Oyarifa in the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly.
She said the lack of interest in government projects would promote corruption and national retrogression.
Madam Annan, therefore, asked the people in the community to ensure that the commununal needs were addressed, saying, “Do not just sit on the fence and leave things to the leadership."
Madam Ophelia Ankrah, La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Director, NCCE, said the event, therefore, sought to empower community members to own community projects in their mutual interest.
She observed that many people only played the blame game without participating in the actual processes of nation building.
"If we are ready to develop, we should participate in the developmental process of the nation, and make our duty bearers know exactly what our needs are," Madam Ankrah said.
The forum was also to evaluate the developmental needs of the Municipality and address them.
The community members urged the Municipal Assembly to replace the windows of the Presbyterian Basic School in the Oyarifa Community with burglary proof ones to ward off criminals activities perpetrated during non - school hours by some elements in the community.
Some Persons With Disabilities also urged the Assembly to speed up the process for disbursement of the Disability Fund - a component of the District Assembly Common Fund that is supposed, by law, to be released on quarterly basis.
They also wanted addressed, the haphazard siting of kiosks and containers in the community and their associated indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
Also, they complained about the deplorable nature of their roads and urged the Assembly to fix them.
The Assembly's representatives at forum promised to present their concerns to Management for remedial action.
