Mr Daniel Kwabena Adjei, Sekyere Afram Plains District Director of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), has reiterated the government's commitment to address post-harvest losses in agricultural production.

He said aside the heavy investments made by the government in the construction of warehouses across the country, farmers and extension officers were also trained to build their capacities on keeping farm produce to help reduce losses.

Mr Adjei was speaking at a training workshop on post-harvest losses for extension officers in the district at Drobonso.

The workshop, which was on the "technical education for agriculture" programme of MOFA, was to strengthen the capacities of extension officers and empower them to engage their stakeholders in the agricultural value chain, effectively.

Mr Adjei said the government was connecting all key stakeholders such as farmers, input dealers, cooperatives, buyers and all other actors in the agricultural value chain, to identify the challenges,reduce post-harvest losses and improve food security.

He said the extension officers would help collect data on farmers and food crops that were produced in excess and were likely to experience glut and offer prompt advice to the Ministry to develop strategies that would help reduce losses in the area.

Mr Adjei said though Sekyere Afram Plains had about 14.5 percent of fertile arable lands in the Ashanti region, it lacked the required number of agricultural officers to offer technical advice to assist farmers to increase productivity.

The district currently has two Veterinary Officers and nine extension officers.

Mr Adjei stressed the need for the Ministry to post more personnel to the area to help provide the needed extension services for farmers in the area.
