As part of efforts to mitigate the socio-economic discomfort associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, The Rebecca Foundation, has donated assorted items to the SOS Village Ghana.
Among the items were boxes of cocoa drink, bags of maize, beans, gari, and rice, as well as cartons of vegetable oil, bags of sugar, boxes of toilet roll, Chocolate spread, washing powder, and some cupcakes.
Mrs Akosua Newman, Director of Operations, The Rebecca Foundation, made the presentation to the Village, on behalf of the First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, who doubles as the Executive Director of the Foundation.
Mrs Newman said the First Lady as a Patron of the SOS Village, acknowledged the possible challenges that could confront the institution "in these times of the Coronavirus pandemic and its attendant lockdown and quarantines", thus, her decision to donate to the Village.
She said the important role the SOS Village play in taking care of orphans in the society made it imperative that they were supported in ensuring that the COVID-19 pandemic did not penetrate their doors since an outbreak on any of their campuses would be disastrous to the innocent children.
She said The Rebecca Foundation through its "Relief Boxes Challenge" initiative had received some contributions from well-meaning Ghanaian individuals and institutions, of which it had made many distributions to various identifiable groups and institutions.
He explained that the First Lady was determined to partner with corporate Ghana to complement the government's efforts at reducing the discomforts associated with the partial lockdown to ensure a halt in the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Mrs Newman asked corporate institutions and individuals to continue partnering the Rebecca Foundation to ensure that its objective of initiating The Rebecca Foundation Relief Boxes Challenge, to reach out to identified persons including Kayayei, the aged, the destitute and single mothers who live in the poorest communities, were provided some respite from the social and economic hardship resulting from COVID-19, was achieved.
In a related development, more companies continue to donate to The Rebecca Foundation Relief Boxes Challenge after the initiative was launched in Accra last week.
The latest to donate to the Foundation are AquaFresh Ltd., producers of Fruitelli, Kalypo and Yoyo Fruity, Faytex Ltd. producers of sanitary pads, A-1 Bakery Ltd and Melcom Ghana.
Aquafresh Ltd donated 200 of its products while Faytex Ltd, donated a 1,000 packs of sanitary pads, with A-1 Bakery, donating 2,000 loaves of bread and Melcom, 300 bottles of sanitizers.
Other companies including Alpha Industries, Delta Paper Mills, Daily Food and Cocoa Processing Company have also presented various items towards The Rebecca Foundation Relief Boxes Challenge.
The items included Top Choco drinks, boxes of washing powder, facial tissues, hand towels, and toilet rolls, some cupcakes and cartons of Alltime Drinking Chocolate.
Receiving the items, Mrs Akufo-Addo, said she was very enthused at the response by companies to partner with The Rebecca Foundation to alleviate the suffering brought about as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
She said while the government appreciated the socio-economic discomfort associated with the measures being taken to prevent wide-spread infection of the deadly COVID-19 and was taking steps to mitigate such discomfort, corporate institutions, and individuals needed to identify ways of joining government to ease the difficulties of the most vulnerable in society.
Mrs. Akufo-Addo said apart from sending relief items to target recipients in Accra and Kumasi, The Rebecca Foundation had also made donations of ventilators, water storage tanks and washing machines to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital as well as surgical gloves and gowns, nose masks and disposable aprons among others, to the Contact tracing team of the Ghana Health Services.
She said Foundation would continue to work closely with stakeholders to provide safety nets for the vulnerable and incentivise health personnel who have put their lives on the line to ensure that COVID-19 does not put Ghana on her knees.
