The two-day forum, starting from July 10 to 11, at the Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, will bring together stakeholders in the digital space to dialogue on issues of internet governance in the country.

The forum will be held on the theme "Digital Communities: the Role of Stakeholders in Sustainable Development", while that of the youth is "Future of Work".

Nana Kofi Asafu-Aidoo, the Coordinator of Ghana Internet Governance Forum, speaking at the launch on Thursday, said the forum would touch on key issues, including privacy, security, cyber security, and infrastructure.

He said experts would discuss issues on internet freedom and digital rights, connectivity issues, safety and stability of the internet and emerging technologies for sustainable development.

Mr Asafu-Aidoo said currently networks like MTN and Vodafone run 4G network infrastructure while AirtelTigo run on 3G network infrastructure, but as a result of the internet protocol, there were seamless communication between all networks in the country.

He said the ability to connect multiple devices has brought about issues of governance of the internet, adding that lawyers were raising jurisdictional issues of the internet including crime perpetuated on the internet.

Mr Asafu-Aidoo said the forum would provide platform for stakeholders to talk about access and security on the internet as it would be the channel for government to deliver many of its services in the digital communication network.

Madam Sarata Omane, a Representative from KACE-ICT, said the forum was a clarion call to academia to participate, adding that, it was necessary for users of the internet to work together and build stronger inter disciplinary partnerships to make considerable progress.

She encouraged all, especially the academic community to join the discussion on an equal basis and via open and inclusive processes.

Madam Felicia Anthonio, representing the Media Foundation for West Africa, said the internet had become an integral part of day-to-day activities and as such it was imperative to ensure that it was used to the benefit of all.

She said there was the need for internet users to be abreast with current issues of the sector, stressing that the multi-stakeholder engagement would help advance social development and improve the digital space in the country.
