Formulating policies to solve societal issues can only be done right if all the stakeholders are properly engaged and the policies tailored to meet their needs. The citizens of any nation are the beneficiaries of all policies that are formulated and these policies must be discussed with them and their viewpoints taken on board so that the policy, when implemented, will be a direct solution to a problem and will be welcomed by all concerned.
These sentiments were re-iterated by the Managing Director of the State Transport Company (STC) Nana Akomea, at a public lecture organised by the Institute of Public Relations (IPR) on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at the British Council Auditorium, Accra.
Speaking on the theme: 'Citizen Engagement in Public Service Delivery: The Strategic Role of Public Relations", the former Information Minister of Ghana indicated that the Public Relations practitioner in any establishment must liaise with all the publics of the establishment, find out what their needs and concerns are and, in turn, relate these sentiments to management so that policies will be formulated to the satisfaction of all concerned.
He gave examples of the Ameri deal, Startimes, students versus University Administration, Drone delivery of medical supplies, double track educational system, paperless system at the ports, etc and explained that if these issues were properly discussed with all the stakeholders, all the brouhaha that ensued would not have happened.
The President of the Institute of Public Relations (IPR), Madam Elaine Sam also buttressed Nana Akomea’s point saying that engaging the publics from conception of ideas, through execution to the end is better than executing an idea and going back to the publics to find out if it is right or wrong. She said that it is better and less expensive to use preventive measures instead of curative ones.
