The New Juaben South Municipal Assembly has disbursed GHC 36, 200 to 30 Persons with Disability (PWDs) urging them to use the fund for economic activities that would improve upon their livelihoods.
The beneficiaries included five hearing impaired persons, 19 physically challenged and one visually impaired individual.
The disbursement was part of the three percent statutory fund on the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF).
Mr Isaac Apau-Gyasi, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), cautioned the beneficiaries against diverting the moneys received for other things apart from economic activities as indicated in their applications.
He said the funds are to enhance their economic activities warning that the assembly would intensify its monitoring to ensure that the funds were being used for the stated purpose.
Ms Evelyn Bansah, the municipal social welfare officer, said the money was given to individuals to empower them economically and not to be used for activities of their various disability associations and groups.
She urged the beneficiaries to use the money for the exact economic activities they stated in their applications adding that the moneys were grant, from the state to support them have better living conditions other than begging on the streets.
She said over the years, they have realized that many beneficiaries did not use the money for the intended purpose and so in a short time after receiving the moneys, come back to the streets to beg and appealed to the beneficiaries to desist from that practice.
