He said this was to help inculcate reading habit in the school children to broaden their knowledge.

Prof Yankah disclosed this when he addressed parents, teachers, school children, heads of schools and chiefs at a meeting at Agona Duakwa in the Agona East District of the Central Region.

He said digital archives would be attached to the library to help compile names of past teachers, heads of schools, chiefs and present leaders in and around Agona Duakwa.

He said poor reading habit had been identified as one of the factors that had contributed to the poor results of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates in the area.

Prof Yankah urged parents to play their role by ensuring that their children patronised the facility regularly to read to update their knowledge.

He said the Ministry had presented computers and accessories to all public schools at Duakwa to promote the teaching and learning of information, communication and technology among the students and the government had approved the construction of science, technology and mathematics centre at the Roman Catholic School at Agona Duakwa to enhance teaching of the subjects at the basic schools.

Ms Vida Mintah Amoah, the Agona East District Director of Education said truancy of BECE candidates had been a major problem associated to the mass examination failure of students at Duakwa and called on parents to play their part by checking their children’s attendance at school.

Participants at the meeting appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to come out with punishable measures for school children since caning was banned in schools.

They also called on the Director General of the GES to take steps to mount checks on absenteeism and apathy on the part of teachers for effective teaching and learning, which they noted were some of the factors that contributed to the poor performance of students.
