President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday met the clergy at the Jubilee House in Accra to address issues of national interest and to deepen the harmonious relations between the Government and religious bodies.
The closed-door breakfast meeting, which was attended by leaders from the Orthodox, Charismatic, Pentecostal churches and representatives of the National Chief Imam, according to a usually reliable source, centred on the issues bothering on the economy, education, taxation of the commercial aspects of church activities, to the controversy on the vexed issues of the building of the National cathedral.
The source hinted that the meeting agreed on the need to tax religious bodies on the commercial aspects of their activities, and the necessity to establish a regulatory body to streamline the activities of religious bodies.
According to the Source, the President apprised the religious leaders at the meeting on the merits of the Government’s Free Senior High School educational policy, and the double-track system scheduled to introduce in September.
The President, the source revealed, spoke frankly with the clergy on the need for all sections of the Ghanaian society to support the government’s vision of creating a prosperous and modern country, with equal opportunities for all people.
"The President was very clear and unambiguous in the discussions at the meeting…and we were also very clear on what we also thought, and hopefully, we will begin to see some positive outcomes as a results of our meeting with him this morning,” the source said.
