The campaign, which is aimed at sensitising the people living within flood-prone areas on the dangers of building in waterways, is part of NADMO’s efforts to prevent the recurrence of floods in the northern part of the country.

Mr Eric Nana Agyeman Prempeh, National Director of NADMO, addressing a press conference here to launch the campaign, said his outfit was making frantic efforts to reduce the impact of flooding of some parts of the northern sector of the country, especially around the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso.

He added that NADMO was collaborating with other stakeholders to prevent the loss of lives and property as a result of spillage from the dam.

Nana Agyeman Prempeh explained further that the operation would assist the communities usually affected by the spillage of the dam to temporarily relocate to other areas in order to escape the dangers associated with the floods.

He mentioned that NADMO would be setting-up a camp at Walewale, capital of the West Mamprusi District for persons who would be relocating from the affected areas.

In addition, he said response teams would be stationed at the areas to promptly deal with distress calls, adding that the exercise would be coordinated from Tamale.

The National Director hinted that many more initiatives would be rolled out by NADMO to effectively address the perennial flooding of the areas.

He mentioned that NADMO was liaising with the authorities of Burkina Faso to always give advance notice before the opening of the dam in order to relocate the residents ahead of time.

Mr Salifu Saeed, Northern Regional Minister on his part called on the residents to cooperate with the officials of NADMO and their collaborators to help prevent the loss of lives and property.

“I am appealing to all, particularly people residing along the catchment areas of the rivers, chiefs and opinion leaders to fully cooperate with NADMO to ensure success of the operation,” the minister pleaded.
