The Police are on high alert at Avenor near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle following an attack on workers of the Articulator Drivers Union of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the area that left two persons with serious injuries.
The attackers believed to be members of the Spare Parts and Mechanics Association allegedly set fire to parts of a building under construction on a disputed land.
They also burnt spare parts and fridges in front of some of the completed stores and also vandalised the offices of the GPRTU.
When the Ghanaian Times visited the scene yesterday morning, Armed Police personnel of the Formed Police Unit (FPU) of the Ghana Police Service with two water cannons were on hand to prevent further destruction to property.
A source at the Kaneshie Divisional Police told the reporters that no arrests have been made as investigations continue in order to get the culprits while efforts are being made to prevent reprisal attacks.
The two sides clashed in February this after the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) in July last year granted a 21-year fixed development term lease to the Articulator Drivers Union to construct a chain of stores to rent to its members as well as the spare parts dealers in the area to protect their businesses after the June 3 disaster.
Under the Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) the Union was to also construct a modern bus terminal for its members with specifications and approval from the GRDA.
The union must also ensure that the Spare Parts Dealers Association seeks approval from the union before the commencement of any physical project.
But the spare parts dealers have been unhappy with the deal , as a result of which frequent clashes have ensued in the area.
The impasse led the union to take legal action at an Accra High Court, in June this year following which the court granted an interlocutory injunction prohibiting the spare parts dealers from interfering in the construction project.
