WEYDON School pupil Katie Summers has returned home from Ghana with a new outlook on life, after she travelled to West Africa to help local schools and communities.
Late last year Katie raised more than £1,000 through an African evening at former South Street restaurant, Sadza African Food, as well as through various other activities, such as dog walking and cleaning cars.
“I would like to thank Minesh and Jay Patel for allowing me to have a collection tin in the Bourne Stores. This was to help me have an amazing life-time experience of helping less privilege children than myself in Ghana,” said Katie.
“Things we take for granted they do not have such as clean running water. We drank at all times out of sealed plastic bags which had filtered water in.
“For toilets, we had to use a hole in the ground. In my camp we had a luxury loo seat over the hole I discovered when I did a stint at the other camp.”
She reflected on her “super” fundraising event at Sadza’s and is grateful that she was able to sell tickets in the shop and that several businesses, including Goodridge Menswear in Downing Street, Bread of Heaven Bakery in Haslemere, The Bourne Stores, Smallbone & Sons and Lavender Hill Company on Frensham Road, donated prizes for night’s raffle.
Katie added: “Spar also donated sweets biscuits for me to take to Ghana and two t-shirts - which one of the young boys loved as his tops had holes in.
“I want to thank all the customers at the Bourne Stores who generously donated to my collection pot. I raised a fantastic £300. Wow. thank you all so much you have helped a lovely community in Ghana.
“Weydon School go back this summer, how envious am I? They are always looking for donations to take over, such as games, clothes and toothpaste. This trip would not be possible with out Mrs Warnock and her volunteer teachers who go.”
