Hundreds of traders operating at the Tarkwa Railway station have appealed to the Minister in-charge of Railway Development, Mr. Joe Ghartey to help relocate them to pave way for the construction of the railway lines in the Municipality.
Some of the traders claimed the Ministry asked them to vacate the area before the end of the year without the provision of alternative places for them to continue with their businesses.
They in this regard urged the Ministry to give them enough time to look for alternative places for their businesses.
One of the affected traders, who gave his name only as Atta Kwabena, explained to the Ghana News Agency in an interview that about three weeks ago, the Minister paid a visit to the area and informed them that by the end of this year, the government would commence work on the railway sector and therefore they have to leave the premises.
He said though the programme must go on for the government to create jobs and achieve its developmental agenda, those who would be affected also needed to be considered as well.
Atta said it would be very difficult for most of the traders to cater for their wards education if nothing was done about the situation before December.
He also pointed out that their major problem was how to repay loans they had collected from banks and that they needed to work to pay back such loans.
A food vendor, who gave her name as Madam Esi Darko, stressed that women could not continue to be dependent on their husbands without rendering any support to their families.
She said the affected traders were prepared to cooperate with the Ministry and the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipal Assembly to help them access a suitable place for them to make a living.
Madam Darko said when this was done the poverty level among women within the municipality would be reduced drastically.
