Universe Aid Foundation (UAF), a non-Governmental Organisation operating in Ghana and the United Kingdom, has donated some teaching and learning materials to a basic school in Goo-Atanda in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region.
The Foundation also dewormed more than 300 children in the community, as part of efforts to keep the children healthy. The donation, which was made up of more than 500 exercise books, 350 Pencils, 200 Pens and some First Aid drugs, is to assist the school, which is deprived.
Dr Kofi Adu, a Ghanaian Pediatrician, in London, presented the items, which were received by the District Education Director, Mr Duncan Nsoh, on behalf of the School and Community. Dr Adu stated that he was touched by a news item by TV3, so he quickly mobilised to make an impact.
A bigger project, he said, was being planned to not only benefit today's kids but also the future ones. “I have also realised that the community does not have potable water, hence they struggle with livestock for water at the only dam in the community.”
“We seek to construct a six-unit classroom block, provide a borehole, tricycle ambulance, medical equipment and clothes for the school and the community within one and half years.”
Dr Adu said he observed that the children of Goo- Atanda were passionate about education, though access to good and quality education was a big challenge to them looking at the poverty level in the area. The only kindergarten and primary school, which was established by Mr Julius Ayamga Pascal, a resident in August 2015 in the community, currently enrolls about 300 pupils.
Mr Pascal thanked the Foundation for their quick response and called for more support for the provision of furniture and qualified teachers. Mr Nsoh, for his part, reiterated that the area needed more support in the education and health sectors to enable them to produce human quality resource who would significantly contribute to the development of the district and the country at large.
He said his doors were opened to philanthropists and organisations who intended to replicate the UAF cause. Akolgo George Akolbire, the Assemblyman for the Area, on behalf of the community, thanked the Foundation and called for more development projects for the community.
