The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Eric Kwakye Darfuour, has charged the Municipal and District Assemblies in the region to work in the interest of the people to improve their wellbeing and life situations.
He said the mandate of the municipal and district assemblies were to implement policies and programmes that would enhance the situations of people in their respective areas especially those in the rural areas.
The Regional Minister who was speaking at the presentation of the 2016 District league Table (DLT) results in Koforidua, noted that despite the challenges and constraints, the assemblies needed to upscale their performance to meet the needs of the people.
He said the rankings should rather spur the municipal and districts assemblies on, to devise new ways and sustainable strategies to tackle their shortcomings to ensure that the people are able to participate in national development without any hindrance.
The Regional Minister who is also the Member of parliament for Nkawkaw, said the rankings was not meant to name and shame but rather to make the assemblies aware of their shortcoming and seek to improve on their ranking and engage the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to support them.
The Regional Planning and Economic Officer, Mr Jonathan Awuah, urged the districts not to personalize the rankings but rather look at ways to upscale their performance in terms of delivering quality service to the people.
He said there were several issues such as the BECE and toilet facilities under the Education and Sanitation indicators for the DLT ranking which the assemblies could devise strategies to deal with to enhance their performance.
The Eastern Region with an average score of 56 percent out of a targeted score of 100 percent ranked 8th region out of the 10 regions.
