Earth Volunteers, a non-governmental organization, on Wednesday commissioned a water system to serve as a source of potable water for pupils of Ampaia-Ajumako D/A and Methodist basic schools in the central region.
Mr Joseph Grant, Chairman of the organisation, said he observed on his visit to these schools that the pupils did not have water to wash their hands before eating during break time.
He said water was a basic need and the children deserved to live healthy, adding, “I was saddened to hear that the pupils didn’t wash their hands before eating or even have good water to drink after eating so I decided to come to their aid in my own small way”.
The headmaster of D/A basic school, Mr. Francis Mawuko said the pupils had to walk miles away to fetch water from the stream every morning and it was not enough for them to wash their hands and to drink.
“I was so happy when Mr Grant told us he wanted to get us a pipe. He has lifted a big burden off our shoulders,” he expressed. Mr Grant said he discussed his intention to help the schools get pipe borne water with his friend who offered to support him.
“Thanks to De Kaproos, today we stand here to commission this pipe and the smiles on the faces of the children are enough”, he added. He also urged the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and headmasters of both schools to do well with the payment of the bills and also to take good care of the pipe for continuous flow of water for the pupils.
The chief and people of Ajumako expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Mr Grant and his organisation for the kind gesture to the schools and community at large and also promised to keep it well.
