The GLICO General, an indigenous insurance company, has renovated the Orthopaedic Female Ward of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital at the cost of GH? 100,000.
The ward, which was in deplorable condition, had been given a facelift with the painting of the entire block, fixing of new louvre blades, electrical gadgets, floor tiles and curtains as well as the provision of new television sets and fans.
Speaking at the inauguration of the facility on Tuesday, Dr Frederick Kwarteng, the Head of the Accident Centre at the Hospital, said the Management of the Hospital was looking for funds to renovate the facility when the insurance company timely intervened.
He, therefore, commended GLICO for the support and appealed to other corporate entities in the country to emulate the kind gesture.
Nana Efua Rockson, the Head of Corporate Affairs and Marketing at GLICO, said the company decided to refurbish the ward as part of its corporate social responsibility, which coincided with GLICO General’s 10th anniversary.
She noted that though GLICO had operated in the country for the past 30 years, however, GLICO General, a subsidiary of GLICO Group of Companies, had been operating in the country for the past 10 years and thus, decided to support the facility to give back to the society.
The Orthopaedic Ward was part of the 1923 structure constructed by the British Colonial Administration to offer healthcare services to the citizenry and serve as a national referral centre.
