The NCCE congratulated the President-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for the victory.

The commission also commended President John Dramani Mahama, presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for graciously conceding defeat.
The statement said: “we have once again achieved another landmark in our nation’s history and enhanced our international credibility”.

It extolled the Electoral Commission (EC) for the smooth process of the elections, saying that “the exemplary efficiency and transparency of the 2016 elections comparable to international standards demonstrates that State institutions have both the capacity and competency to deliver on their mandates”.

The NCCE also lauded the contribution of its staff for their contribution, support, dedication and hard work which sustained the Commission’s civic and voter education activities throughout the election period which resulted in the incident free polls.

Acknowledging the European Union and other Civil Society Organisations for their contributions to the peaceful process, the NCCE noted that it was time “we put our shoulders to the wheel to help the incoming government to be an excellent driver of our democratic process.”

Ghana last week went to the polls, the seventh time since 1992, to elect a president and 275 parliamentarians to run the affairs of the country for the next four years.

The exercise was generally peaceful with little incidents reestablishing Ghana’s position as the beacon of democracy and the oasis of peace on the African continent.
The election has seen been labeled as the most peaceful and transparent in Ghana’s history thus far.
