Delivering his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, advised freshmen and freshwomen to endeavour to abide by the rules and regulations of the University, and to make good use of the learning environment and academic facilities and opportunities at the university.
Prof. Owusu stated that for the 2016/2017 academic year, the University received a total of 40,435 applications, made up of 32,843 undergraduate and 7,592 graduate applications. Out of these numbers, the University was able to offer admission to 25,295 students.  The Vice Chancellor noted that 7,611 undergraduates and 2, 940 graduate students have enrolled for the 2016/17 academic year.

In his welcome statement, the Acting Registrar Mr. Enoch Amartey, reminded students of their responsibility to undertake their studies seriously.  Mr. Amartey later administered the Matriculation Oath to confer membership status on the new students in accordance with University of Ghana Act 2010, Act 806.

Mr. Cedric Etornam Kyekye, a student from the School of Medicine and Dentistry School, and resident of Hilla Limann Hall, read the "Expectations of University Life" Address on behalf of his colleague freshmen.
He encouraged his colleagues to study hard, manage their time, and make use of the facilities at their disposal. Mr. Kyekye later signed the Matricula on behalf of his colleagues.

The important ceremony was almost marred by reports of some unruly behaviour allegedly put up by some students’ moments before the Matriculation ceremony.  Investigations are underway and as mentioned by the Vice Chancellor in his address, those found culpable will be sanctioned in accordance with the rules and regulations of the University as well as face the full rigours of the law.
