Mr Mark Woyongo, Upper East Regional Minister, on Thursday appealed to teachers in the region to rescind their decision to join in the planned demonstration by teachers countrywide due to the region’s peculiar situation.
The teachers who were not happy about the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) have threatened not to participate in the forthcoming Independence Day celebration on March 6.
Addressing the heads of Basic Schools in the region, the Minister emphasized the need for teachers to consider the peculiar situation in the region whenever they were to embark on demonstrations and strikes.
He noted that unlike the other regions in the country that were performing very well, schools in the Upper East Region performed abysmally.
He said: “You should consider the abysmal performance of schools in the region and sacrifice a bit to help the little ones”.
Mr Woyongo assured the teachers that the Ministry of Education was going into consultation to help address the anomaly and entreated them to bear with the government whilst the problem was being addressed.
“Government is concerned about your plight and sympathizes with you and so was doing everything possible to help address the problem once and for all, so exercise restraint,” he stressed.
Head teachers of Basic Schools in the region said because of the media hype given to the SSSS, there have been higher increases of goods and services which were affecting living condition generally.
Mrs Agnes Atagabi, Acting Regional Director of Education, entreated the heads of the Schools to convince the teachers not to embark upon their intended demonstration and strikes.
