Parents of children at the Dadease Roman Catholic Primary in the Asante-Bekwai Municipality have complained about the poor work ethics of teachers in the school saying it is negatively affecting the performance of the pupils.
The teachers, they claim, are most of the time either absent from the classroom or report to work late.
Mr Francis Adarkwah-Yiadom, Member of the School Management Committee (SMC), told the Ghana News Agency that this was unhealthy for effective academic work in the school.
It has led to a situation where “some primary four pupils cannot even spell their own names.”
He said the parents together with the SMC had held a number of meetings with the teachers to register their displeasure but this had had no positive effect.
“Many parents are therefore withdrawing their children. As many as 40 pupils had already left.
“Nothing could be more disheartening to see children, under the age of 10 years, making a round trip of six or more kilometres to attend school at Ehuren, Asakyiri and Abodom,” he said.
Mr Adarkwa-Yiadom, a former Environmental Officer of the now defunct Bonte Gold Mine, said there were instances he personally went to the school to teach the children when the teachers were absent.
He therefore appealed to the education authorities to call the teachers to order and ensure effective supervision.
