Madam Janet Adama Mohammed, Director of Human Rights and Democratization Programme of Ibis West Africa, has urged women to build stronger relations in their communities to enable them to maintain peace in the society.
She said some cultures in Ghana had norms and procedures that were often used to sustain and improve relations and these must be strengthened.
"Inter-marriages and other social affiliations turn to enable humans develop some social connectivity that is difficult to break," she added.
Madam Adama was addressing a two-day workshop in Tamale on Thursday on the role women could play in giving early signals that could prevent conflicts.
The workshop was organized by the Women in Peace Building Movement (WPBM) in collaboration with the Ghana Network for Peace Building (GHANEP) and aims at equipping the participants with skills to resolve conflicts in their communities.
Madam Adama said women were in a position to share information on events, bringing their views and perspectives for healing traumas in conflict situations.
Mr Moses Bukari Mabengba, Northern Regional Minister, observed that women needed to be involved in peace building initiatives since they were naturally endowed with skills that could help in peace building efforts in the country.
He however urged them to take account of themselves and do self introspection to be able to make amends to be stronger in their chosen
areas.
Mr Mabengba noted that the Northern Region needed peace for development and efforts aimed at building peace in the area must be commended saying; "a lot of resources were being wasted due to the frequent conflicts in the region".
He urged women to use their power of observation to pick up early signs of conflict in their communities and report them to the authorities.
Hajia Zaratu Abdul-Rahaman, President of WPBM, said the workshop was to help women build opportunities to enhance their efforts in peace building.
She called on the government and civil society organizations to give women a chance to contribute to finding lasting peace in Dagbon.
