The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), has pledged to be resolute in the enforcement of its environmental sanitation bye-laws.
Mr Kwaku Afari Gyem, the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, who announced this, said the Assembly would do everything to get the city clean and end the unhealthy practice of dumping garbage into gutters and drains, which block the flow of rain water by some residents.
He was speaking at the launch of a joint anti-flood campaign by the KMA and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in Kumasi on Friday.
It is aimed at helping the people to appreciate the need to do away with bad habits and practices that tended to create conditions for flooding during rainfall.
The launch was heralded by a massive clean-up exercise, which lasted for more than four hours in some flood prone areas including Dr Mensah, Asawasi, Kwadaso, Anomange, Asokwa and Old Tafo.
Mr Afari Gyem asked the people to have the courage to expose and help bring to order to those polluting the environment and creating a mess in the Metropolis.
The Coordinating Director said the KMA would work with all, who shared in its vision of keeping Kumasi clean.
Mrs Vivien Akumia, the Metropolitan NADMO Coordinator, said the campaign was part of efforts at combating floods in the Metropolis by
reaching out to the people with education on why they should stop blocking the waterways.
She said flood disasters could be avoided if people desisted from indiscriminate waste dumping.
