St Dominic Hospital at Akwatia in the Eastern Region, has celebrated its golden jubilee, receiving high praises for its marvelous achievements.
Speaking at the ceremony at Akwatia, the Deputy Minister of Health, Mr. Rojo Mettle-Nunoo, saluted the Dominican sisters for their pioneering role
that had sustained the hospital and said that government would continue to support the Catholic Church in promoting health care.
Referring to the hospital's intention to build an ultra-modern gynaecology clinic, he pledged that funding for the project would be considered for inclusion in the 2011 budget.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, commended the hospital for working hard to improve health care delivery in the country.
The Akwatiahene, Osabarima Kofi Boateng III, expressed the hope that Ghanaians would take over the role of the Dominican sisters after their
departure.
His Most Reverend Charles Palmer Buckle, Catholic Archbishop of Accra, called on Ghanaians to emulate the Dominican sisters.
Dr. Mrs Mercy Dawson, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, said that the facility, which began operating in 1960 as a clinic, built and donated by the Akwatia Traditional Council with 20 beds, presently had 356 beds in its main wards and 28 beds at the casualty ward.
She praised the staff for working as a team adding that the hospital had never experienced any strike action since its inception.
