The Ashanti Regional branch of Prison Officers Ladies Association (PRILAS), has presented food items worth GH¢200 to male inmates of the Kumasi Central Prisons.
The items included sugar, oranges, banana, sachet water, bread and pineapples.
Chief Superintendent Joana Tackie-Otoo, Ashanti Regional President of PRILAS, said the gesture was to demonstrate the love and care of members to
the inmates, especially those who have been neglected by their families.
She said PRILAS used to support only female inmates of the Prison but decided to extend the gesture to the male inmates.
Chief Superintendent Tackie-Otoo said that the Association was established in 2006 to bring female warders under one roof to promote their interest.
She said that the PRILAS had established Mother and Baby Unit for pregnant inmates at the Nsawam Prison.
Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (DSP) Bridget Vera Sankah, Regional Secretary of PRILAS, who is also in-charge of the Prison Infirmary, called
on government to increase the number of health personnel at the Infirmary.
She said the Prison has one nurse and four health assistants and that about 150 to 250 inmates visited the Infirmary daily for treatment.
DSP Sankah said malaria, skin rushes, chicken pox, diarrhea, dizziness and hernia were the most common disease reported at the facility.
She said the Infirmary had received support from the Pharmacy Council, Churches and individuals and appealed to government and philanthropists to
stock the Infirmary with drugs and equipment.
Reverend Father DSP Martin Padi, Chaplain, Northern Sector of Ghana Prison Service, who received the items, commended the PRILAS for the
gesture.
