The Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of
the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has taken delivery of laboratory and office equipment worth GH¢600,000.00.
The equipment, meant to facilitate research and teaching, include DNA sequencer, PCR machines, centrifuges, incubators, freeze dryer growth chambers as well as spectrophotometres and flurometres.
They were donated by the Plant Science Group of the Wageningen University and Research Centre, Netherlands, in response to an appeal by the Department.
Dr Ernst van den Ende, Director-General of the Group, in a speech read for him, praised KNUST for its research and innovative programmes.
He urged the University to pay particular attention to agricultural research given the multiple effects the sector's development could have on Ghana's economy.
The Director-General encouraged scientists and technocrats to liaise with their colleagues in universities on the continents to share ideas and knowledge to address the socio-economic and industrial development challenges facing Africa's.
Professor Kwasi Kwafo-Adarkwa, the Vice Chancellor, thanked the donors for the gesture, saying, it was time corporate bodies committed resources towards expanding facilities at the University.
This, he said, would help them to admit more students for the various programmes to strengthen the human resource base of the country.
