The District Director of Education in charge of the Talensi-Nabdam District in the Upper East Region, Mr. Francis Ayaaba, has observed that attitudes of teachers could have either positive or negative impact on the development of the children they teach at schools.
The District Director made the observation during an orientation Workshop organized for National Service and National Volunteer Service
Personnel at Winkongo in the Talensi-Nabdam District.
He bemoaned the spate of negative attitude put up by some teachers in schools and said it has negative influence on the children as they grow.
He cited habitual drunkenness, smoking, sexual misconduct, indecent dressing, inciting school children to engage in strikes and demonstrations among others as some of the negative attitudes put up in some schools, which he noted if not checked would have serious effect on the development of children in the country.
He indicated that there were instances where some teachers in some cases turn their schools into commercial centers to transact business and so did not concentrate on the teaching of children.
Mr. Ayaaba attributed gross indiscipline among students in recent times to the negative attitude of some teachers and appealed to the National Volunteer Service Personnel who were posted to the District to be role models to the communities they serve especially in the schools where most of them were teaching.
He said it was only through good modules that the schools and communities they served could make a positive impact on development.
The District Director told the National Service personnel that National Service was an art of leadership and discipline and that they should dedicate themselves fully to the programme since it would benefit them.
The Headmaster of the Bolgatanga Senior High School, Mr. Didacus Afegera commended the NSS for continuously providing service personnel to the school and said about 90 per cent of them had been permanently employed due to their commitment to duties.
Mr. Afegera said the Scheme had also provided technical teachers that were not easy to come by.
The District Coordinator of the NSS in-charge of the Talensi-Nabdam District, Mr. Michael Zuri stated that the orientation programme for the service personnel was part of the Secretariat's yearly programme aimed at educating the new personnel on what the Service expects of them.
He disclosed that District National Service Secretariat through the Volunteer Service Scheme had gone into partnership with Voluntary Service Oversee, (VSO) with funding from Comic Relief an international NGO based in United Kingdom to implement Educational programmes dubbed "Tackling Education Needs Inclusively (TENI)" in the Talensi-Nabdam in the Upper East, Jirapa in the Upper West and West Mamprusi District in the Northern Region.
