The Convention Peoples Party, on Sunday donated food items, worth GH¢3,000 to the surviving Ex-Servicemen, who participated in the peaceful demonstration of February 28, 1948, which led to the crossroads shooting, that killed three of them.
Ms Suzan Adu, CPP Greater Accra Regional Chairperson led the party's delegation to present the items, which include 20 bags of rice, gallons of cooking oil and toiletries to Group Captain Jones Mensah, Executive Director of the Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) in Accra.
A statement read by Ms Suzan Adu said "CPP pays glowing tribute to the gallant men who fell
that day and acknowledges with profound gratitude, the significance of the crossroads shooting,especially the snowball effect it had on the increased agitations for independence throughout the country".
It said the donation was a demonstration of the party's appreciation of the contribution of the Ex-Servicemen to the independence of Ghana adding "the party wishes to assure Ghanaians that
the toil and the blood that was shed for the attainment of independence would not be in vain."
It said the CPP remained committed to attaining economic independence for the country just as it attained political independence for her in 1957.
"The CPP has the keys to the unfinished national agenda of transforming Ghana from a third
world to a middle income economy" the statement added.
It called on Ghanaians to face the reality and do the needful in December 2012 by voting CPP to
power to complete the unfinished agenda of economic transformation for the benefit of all.
Group Captain Mensah, on behalf of the VAG, thanked the party for the gesture.
