A security meeting of army chiefs from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), Rwanda and Burundi took place on Tuesday in Matadi, the provincial capital of Bas Congo, 365 km southwest of Kinshasa, Radio Okapi reported.
Citing the UN mission in DR Congo (MONUC) and the Congolese army (FARDC), the report said the objective of this meeting was to evaluate the Kimia ll operation.
The operation was aimed at pacifying the eastern part of DR Congo by neutralizing rebels of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, who were the planners of the 1994 Rwanda genocide, as well as other armed groups that have been spreading terror and insecurity in the conflict-stricken central African country.
According to Radio Okapi, MONUC commander Babacar Gaye was also present at the Matadi meeting.
"This is exactly the second tripartite session for evaluation of Kimia ll operation," a senior staff of the FARDC told the radio.
He said James Kabarebe, the chief of general staff for the Rwandan army, his Burundian counterpart Godefroid Niyombare and DR Congo's army chief Didier Etumba held a session which was going on behind closed doors.
"For the moment, nothing has come out from the discussions. The discussions will go on ... until this evening. They are still evaluating the Kimia ll operation," he said.
The first evaluation meeting was held in Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu in DR Congo on Aug. 31, 2009.
