Ghanaian artiste and Sugarcane hitmaker, Camidoh has lost his first BET award after missing out on the 2023 BET Viewers Choice: Best New International Act award at this year’s awards ceremony held yesterday, June 25.
Cameroonian singer/songwriter Libianca clinched the covetous title beating the likes of Camidoh, Werenoi (France), FLO (UK), Raye (UK), Maureen (France), MC Ryan SP (Brazil), Paris Cooper (South African) and Nigeria’s Asake for the award.
Despite the loss, a number of his fans on social media have expressed optimism about his global exploits in the coming years.
Also, West Africa had a strong representation at this year’s event. Apart from Nigeria’s Davido thrilling patrons with his eclectic performance, his other country man, Burna Boy made history as the first African artiste to win the Best International Act four times.
TEMS also won the Best Collaboration with Future and Drake.
Camidoh adds up to the number of Ghanaian artistes who have earned nominations in previous years.
They are Kojo Antwi, D Black, Sarkodie, R2bees, Stonebwoy, Fuse ODG, MzVee, Kwesi Arthur and Black Sherif.
Camidoh, real name Raphael Camidoh Kofi Attachie earned considerable attention with songs such as For My Lover, Slow, Adoley and Kaba.
However, the VGMA24 Afrobeats Song of the Year winner gained international prominence when he released the remix of ‘Sugarcane’ which featured Mayorkun and Darkoo in 2022.
The BET Awards is an American award show that was established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate black entertainers and other minorities in music, film, sports and philanthropy.
