The Société Générale Ghana -led Accra Jazz Festival powered by Alliance Française is held annually to celebrate International Jazz Day. One of the performers who rocked the stages of this year’s Accra Jazz festival is Destyn Maloya, an Afrobeat musician from La Reunion.
Destyn Maloya leads a group of 6 members whose music celebrates and defends French traditional culture. The maloya, songs of slavery, emerged during hundreds of years of French Colonial rule on the island. Its form, like the blues, is rooted in slavery and closely tied to creole culture and also ska, samba, and Afrobeat. Lulled by the winds of the coast and Reunion Islands, the Maloya group carries the torch of their ancestors, passing on tradition and passion to future generations.
Destyn Maloya has performed in several countries around the world. In homeland France, he performed in festivals such as the Sakifo Festival and Tempo festival. He also featured in the Rodrigue Island festival kreol, Madagascar Festival Donia, Mayotte, and Anjouan Medina Festival. In India, he performed in the Isai global Chennai festival. In Australia, Destyn Maloya starred for the Womadelaide and in New Zealand for the womad festival.
For the past 20 years, Destyn Maloya and his group are noted for fascinating their audiences with playful percussions. By bringing new approaches to their music and revealing rhythms with very mixed colours, Destyn Maloya captivates listeners as he sets the stage on fire.
The lyrics of the maloya music reminds the audience, of a "homecoming", of the sufferings of slaves, their struggles for freedom and their daily problems, namely, jealousy, manipulation, illness. The versatility of the group members also gives the group a good musical variation. Their youthful and explosive talents reinvent the traditional maloya to embellish it.
