The 8th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, was held in Nigeria from Saturday, May 7, 2022 to Saturday, May 14, 2022.
The programme, organised by MultiChoice, was pregnant with activities that sought to project the entire entertainment industry in Africa.
The whole award festival started on May 7, 2022, with an opening night gala that saw a lot of celebrities and people in the creative industry in attendance. This was followed by a runway show on Sunday, May 8, 2022, as a way of affecting other art fields other than film, due to their direct impact on the entire film and television industry.
On Monday, May 9, 2022, a session was held for young filmmakers in the industry. The participants were mainly students of the MultiChoice Talent Factory, a filmmaking academy that grooms young moviemakers and offers them great opportunities in the film industry.
Other activities for this year’s awards event included the Content Marketing Workshop, where content providers were taken through the requirements for submitting their content to Africa Magic.
Acknowledging the impact new media has had on society, a Digital Content Creators Brunch was held on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, to discuss how digital content creators could impact their various communities positively.
Mr. Macaroni, Elozonam, KieKie, and other digital content creators were part of a panel. They also talked about establishing a mutual partnership with MultiChoice platforms and how to use their crafts to affect society.
Culture, being the driving force of arts and entertainment, was not left out of the celebration. There was a celebration of Africa’s diversity in culture on Thursday, May 12, 2022. There was an exhibition of clothes, food and a mix of music, theatre, poetry, and dance, among others.
Nigerian Afrobeat artiste Seun Kuti was a sight to behold at the programme.
He thrilled the audience with a spectacular performance of songs from his rich repertoire of Afrobeat.
What could be described as one of the highlights of this year’s Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards was the encounter with some stars from Hollywood and Nollywood. Tasha Smith, and her twin sister Sidra Smith, Dr. Shiella Walker, Brandon Michael Hall, Bayo Akifemi and Nollywood actresses Kate Henshaw, Chioma Chukwuka, and Grant, a film director at Paramount Pictures, gave filmmakers and the media great perspectives on placing film making in Africa on a higher pedestal.
At the Jewels Place at Leki on Friday, May 13, 2022, the nominees and other guests got switched up into a party mood. Hosted by Etim and Adesua, the show had a special performance from Asa, who dished out songs including her timeless, ‘Mr. Jailer’.
The climax of the event was the main award ceremony which was held on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at the Eko Hotels & Suites in Lagos, Nigeria.
Hosted by Sika Osei, Sir Uti, Ebuka and Toke Makinwa on the red carpet, with Nigerian media personality, IK Osakioduwa, together with South Africa’s media darling, Bonang Matheba as hosts on the main stage, the event came with all the glam it is noted for.
Artistes like Yemi Alade, D’Banj, Rema and Lagbaja took turns to thrill the audience at the programme.
