Kelly Clarkson is adding a new show to her résumé, and though many fans are excited for the American Idol alum, others can’t help but feel a little worried. Folks are asking what this could mean for her already jam-packed work schedule — and, more specifically, if she’ll need to vacate her red chair on The Voice.
Apart from coaching aspiring artists on The Voice and hosting her daytime TV talk show The Kelly Clarkson Show, she’s now teaming up with rapper Snoop Dogg for American Song Contest. The new NBC musical competition series will feature 56 artists representing the 50 states, five U.S. territories and the country’s capital. If the concept sounds familiar, it’s probably because it was inspired after the popular international singing competition Eurovision Song Contest.
Since Kelly first announced her latest TV project with a 30-second trailer during Super Bowl Sunday, fans have wondered out loud if this is a sign that she might be ready to move on from The Voice. “Does this mean you're leaving the voice? ????????,” one person wrote on Instagram in February.
Is Kelly Clarkson leaving The Voice in 2022?
First and foremost, the “Since U Been Gone” singer hasn’t mentioned anything about leaving The Voice. Though Kelly hasn’t spoken about a possible departure from the show, she recently hinted that there might be changes in her work schedule. Shortly after the New Year, the Grammy-winning vocalist hopped on an Instagram Live to answer some quick questions. She took this opportunity to open up about how her shifting mindset. According to Kelly, she wanted to spend more time with her children (7-year-old daughter River and 5-year-old son Remington).
“I’ve decided this year there’s just [going to] be a couple changes for me that I can’t say here,” she said in the Q&A. “But there’s a couple things happening. I’ve been able to make more time just for me and my kiddos and still be able to work. Just where we can get away on weekends and really do some fun stuff with my kids.”
Kelly continued:“’Cause they only want to hang out with you for so long and that’s now so I gotta take advantage of that … I’m excited to have more time with them. I mean I have a ton of time in the morning but I don’t know, I’m selfish. They’re fun.”
While she stopped short of sharing exact details, the Texas native didn’t explicitly say whether or not the shakeup would affect her presence on The Voice. It’s also important to note that The Voice hasn’t been renewed for season 22 yet.
If and when a new batch of episodes are ordered, the installment would most likely air sometime in the fall of 2022. As fans may know, Kelly first joined The Voice in 2018 for season 14 with Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Alicia Keys. Throughout the past four years, she’s scored four historic wins, including Brynn Cartelli, the youngest winner on the show in season 14, and Girl Named Tom, the first group to win the show in season 21.
What’s more, Kelly began executive producing when The Kelly Clarkson Show officially debuted in September 2019 and she’ll be doing the same for American Song Contest. In other words, she’s got her plate full but it’s hard to tell right now what she’s thinking about her future on The Voice. For now, we can just hope that Kelly will stay on board and help discover the next great talent.
