In spite of the constant lament about our music industry, Ghanaian music is gradually making inroads on the global stage.
For instance, Afrobeats artiste KiDi’s Touch It became a global hit, spurring challenges across the world and breaking into charts in several countries.
It is in acknowledgment of the exploits of Ghanaian artistes both home and abroad that initiatives such as Ghana Music Awards UK and Ghana Music Awards have come.
Now, a new scheme known as Ghana Music Awards Dubai (GMA-Dubai) is set to be unveiled on January 30, 2022.
The brainchild of Medvic Media, a subsidiary of Medvic Company Limited, GMA-Dubai, according to the organisers is primarily aimed at recognising the efforts of Ghanaian musicians and the impact of Ghanaian music in Dubai.
It is also to honour creative industry personalities in and outside Ghana who have positively contributed to the growth of the music industry.
Speaking with Graphic Showbiz on the scheme, one of the organisers, Robert Owusu Acquah said it was time for Ghanaian music to have a big presence in Dubai.
“Dubai is a commercial city with cultural diversity and has African music and culture being significantly acknowledged. Most Africans including Ghanaians, Nigerians, South Africans, Ugandans among others, celebrate a lot of occasions in the UAE and the city of Dubai remains one of the vacation destinations for Africans.
There is therefore exposure of African culture and music in the country and we want Ghanaian music to be recognised there just like it is in the UK and US.
“We also want to create a platform which will facilitate a smooth working relationship between Ghanaian musicians and their counterparts in Dubai and other parts of the world, especially with regards to collaborations,” he stated.
Robert Owusu Acquah expressed hope that the event will be embraced by all. “We just want to promote excellence and give recognition to Ghanaian artistes not in Ghana but those in the US, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Middle East.
“We want to help raise the standard of Ghanaian music on the world music scene,” he stated.
The launch, which will be held in Ghana, is expected to have artistes and stakeholders in the music industry in attendance.
