Brazil registered a total of 1.16 million new formal jobs in the first 10 months of 2009, according to the National Registry of Employed and Unemployed CAGED)'s monthly report, released on Monday by the Labor Ministry.
According to the CAGED report, in October Brazil generated 230,956 new formal jobs , a record for the month and up from 61,000 last October.
The good results were mainly attributed to the robust performance of some sectors in October, with the highest number of hirings (74,552) in the
transformation industry, followed by 69,581 in the tertiary sector, 68,516 in the trade sector and 26,156 in the construction sector.
However, the agricultural sector registered a negative result with 11,569 dismissals because October is a period between harvests.
Brazil's Labor Minister Carlos Lupi estimated last week that over one million jobs had been created by mid-October 2009, and he expected the
figure to rise to 2 million in 2010.
Although the goal for job creation in the first 10 months has been confirmed as accomplished, the figure is still below 2.14 million formal jobs generated in the same period in 2008.
