Uganda's export earnings have been growing by 9.2 percent annually for the last four years, an
official with Uganda's Export Promotions Board said on Tuesday.
Ben Natulinda told Xinhua on Tuesday that in the calendar year 2000, Uganda's export earnings stood at 401 US million dollars whereas in 2002, they were 470 million dollars. In 2003, they grew to 522 million dollars and it is estimated that in 2004 the
country earned over 550 million dollars from export.
Natulinda said fish exports, flowers, cereals spices and some manufactured products bring in a lot of revenue, making non-traditional exports fetch higher earnings compared to the traditional exports, coffee and cotton.
In 1998, traditional exports brought in over 60 percent of the total export earnings with the non-traditional exports contributing about 38 percent.
In 2003, the non-traditional export earnings grew to 61 percent of the country's export earnings, which was a 23 percent increase from the previous year.
Of recent, this east African country has embarked on an export led growth by accessing other markets like the Common Market for East and Central Africa, the East African Community on top of other world markets.
