The gaming industry in Ghana has shown significant potential for growth, with the global market expected to grow to US$666.68 billion by 2029. MTN Ghana is investing in Ghana’s e-sports industry, having recognized its potential for growth and revenue generation.
According to Maximus Ametorgoh, CEO of eSports Academy and Vice President of e-Sports Association, the gaming industry in Ghana spent US$1.36 million on video games in 2023, highlighting the potential for more growth.
Mr Ametorgoh also emphasized the need for support for local gaming companies to protect their intellectual properties and for registration and trademarking of local content used in e-sports. During a presentation to attendees, Mr Ametorgoh noted that there were about 24.3 million internet users in Ghana, with 7.95 million active on social media and about 36.5% of internet users visiting gaming websites or apps (8.8 million people).
Again about 4.6% of internet users had game consoles (1.1 million console owners) with video gaming being the number one digital media in Ghana, with $1.36 million spent on video games last year.
Kwesi Hayford, President of the e-Sports Association, highlighted the commercial value of e-sports teams and opportunities available for them in Ghana, from content creation to business. He encouraged people to create teams, register them, and approach the association for support.
Mr Hayford also called for collaboration and stakeholder engagement in the e-sports industry and suggested that the industry didn't need regulation, but consolidation. He again highlighted challenges facing gamers, including payment issues, and urged MTN Ghana to work with gaming companies to facilitate payments using Mobile Money.
Dabby Diamond, General Secretary of the E-Sports Association and Team Manager at PlayProvince, noted that the most active part of the downstream e-sports industry in Ghana was gamers, event organizers, and teams, and encouraged gamers to brand themselves and position themselves to attract brands or investors.
MTN Ghana's Manager Video and Gaming, Yaw Antwi Boadu, emphasized the company's commitment to supporting the e-sports community. "We've seen the future of e-sports and want to be part of it," he said. "We're willing to work with the community to ensure its growth." The company recognized the potential for revenue generation in e-sports, including in-app purchases, sponsorships, and sales on platforms, he noted.
The Gaming Focused Group session was the climax to month-long activities by MTN Ghana as part of this year’s DIGIFEST 2025 event lineup. As the e-sports industry continues to grow, MTN Ghana is poised to play a significant role in its development.
