As part of efforts to cut Ghana’s high chicken import bill and strengthen food security, Aglow Chicken, a leading poultry farming and processing company based in Gomoa in the Central Region, has officially opened a new sales outlet at La in Accra.
The outlet will serve poultry consumers in the capital and beyond, offering fresh, locally produced chicken.
The launch comes at a critical time, as Ghana continues to grapple with a soaring food import bill—particularly in the poultry sector, where an estimated 90% of chicken consumed is imported.
According to management, the new outlet is expected to reduce dependence on foreign supply while strengthening the local value chain by creating jobs for farmers, processors, and retailers.
Speaking at the opening ceremony on Thursday, September 11, 2025, the Group CEO of Aglow Chicken, Kofi Brobbey-Kyei, emphasized the need to build trust in Ghana-made poultry products.
“We’re saying there should be restrictions so that only what is needed is imported. But as Christmas approaches, you’ll see large volumes of frozen chicken brought into the country. Competing with them is tough because of our production costs. We pray that proper policies are enacted so the local market is protected. We want to grow, produce, and create jobs for the youth,” he said.
Agribusiness specialist and CEO of Agri-Impact Group Limited, Daniel Fahene Acquaye, highlighted the role of the Mastercard Foundation in supporting Aglow’s revival.
“When we visited Aglow in 2023, the company had shut down. But with support, including starter packs for young people, they’ve been able to restart operations. What we are seeing today is remarkable,” Mr. Acquaye noted.
The Head of the Poultry Desk at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Ricky Aboagye Poku, who reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening local production.
“We can’t create a food security gap by banning imports without having the local capacity to meet demand. Our focus is on building that capacity while ensuring stability,” he said.
With the launch of its Accra outlet, Aglow Chicken joins a growing number of agribusinesses championing Ghana’s poultry self-sufficiency drive.
