The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) has questioned the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia over his promise to reduce the high cost of food if elected to power.
Dr. Bawumia during a meeting with members of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs and the clergy in Sunyani on Wednesday, disclosed that his government will invest in agriculture to reduce the high cost of food to boost the economy.
Reacting to this, the General Secretary of GAWU, Edward Kareweh in an interview with Citi News, highlighted several ongoing governmental initiatives yet to be concluded.
He also expressed skepticism about Dr. Bawumia’s ability to implement such a policy, amidst existing unresolved agricultural issues.
He said, “This government introduced the planting for food and jobs programme. What is the state of that programme. Have we been able to increase production? Have we increased food security? No. So how are you going to do this when you start a project, and you don’t allow the project to complete?
“I also want to ask. If you want to increase food productivity in the system, how can you allow galamsey to fester? Because galamsey is destryong agriculture. It has destroyed all the rivers and all aquatic lives in the rivers are gone.
“It has even destroyed the forest. What are they doing about that?” the General Secretary of GAWU, Edward Kareweh queried.
