Evans Danso is the owner of Flosell Farms, a tilapia hatchery and farm at Sogakope in the Volta Region of Ghana. He was honoured as Ghana’s best fish farmer of 2020 at the Farmers and fishers’ day awards ceremony at Techiman in the Bono East Region.
Flosell Farms is a local fish enterprise and a participant in the National Tilapia Seed Project. The farm uses extruded soy-based fish feed to produce about two million tilapia fingerlings per week. It also produces table-sized fish for sale. Flosell farms helped to host the National Tilapia Vaccination Programme which sought to tackle the outbreak of the Infectious Spleen and Kidney Necrosis Virus (ISKNV) that began on Lake Volta in 2018. ISKN viruses predominantly cause disease in a variety of freshwater fish (particularly cichlids, gouramis, and poeciliids) and may lead to high mortality of fish.
For the love of aquaculture, Evans quit his job as a packaging manager with a multinational food company to become a fish farmer. According to him, it is fulfilling to see fish go through the stages of growth and know that the consumers are served the best fish. As the national best fish farmer, his prize included a 40-seater bus.
Flosell farms serves as an alternative employment opportunity for many Ghanaians. It also provides training in aquaculture for those who want to venture into fish farming. The global aquaculture market size is projected to reach about 3 million by 2025. Flosell farms seeks to share in this market opportunity by raising quality fish for the Ghanaian community and West Africa.
